Smartphones are now the leading source for Malware infections to mobile networks
Taking the lead for the first time from personal computers, smartphones now account for 60% of mobile malware.
Nokia threat intelligence lab released their latest Malware report where they discovered mobile phones have taken the lead from windows based computers and laptops, accounting for 60% of all malware activity. For the first time, iOS Malware has featured on their top twenty list with iPhone malware representing 6% of the total infections in October 2015.
Still remaining the mobile software that is targeted most often, increasing sophistication in Android malware has also driven the push of smartphone infections, particularly the marked move of ransomware to Android, a long established threat of the personal computer world.
It was also noted that mobile malware generally is becoming more sophisticated and with that more resilient to removal, with variations now even able to survive a full factory reset and thus are almost impossible for people to uninstall.
Kevin McNamee, head of the Nokia Threat Intelligence Lab, said: “Security is a very real concern for any device with an IP address, be it Android, iPhone or even a Windows PC connected to the mobile network. While Android infections continue to rise and become more sophisticated, the Nokia Threat Intelligence Report from late 2015 was the first time we saw iOS malware make our top 20 list, with XcodeGhost being the fourth most prevalent malware detected. We also saw a rise in a variety of ransomware apps that try to extort money by claiming to have encrypted the phone’s data. Nokia’s security approach reaches into the network to stop malware before getting to the device itself and before damage can occur.”
