Ransomware targeted UK Android users in 2015
In a new report by Bitdefender, the proliferation of ransomware into the mobile industry and its associated costs to those affected are highlighted.
Ransomware is a form of malicious software that is designed to attack a user’s device rendering certain services or holding hostage certain information until the user relinquishes a sum of money. Long a problem in the computer world it has only been in recent years these unscrupulous programmers have been targeting the smartphone sector, in particular, Android operating systems.
Android ransomware could be considered more important than its PC counterpart because mobile devices have access to and store a lot of personal and even corporate data that’s usually not backed up. Losing that data or simply being denied access to it could be irreversible and users would be far more inclined to pay to recover their contacts, conversations, pictures and documents.
Rated as a top threat in the UK, with 44% of their respondents claiming to have paid out for information already, Bitdefender warn that just as the malware of PC’s started innocently enough, this behaviour can lead to increasingly destructive and aggressive programmes.
