BT Openreach signs deal with Ciena

Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) is a point to point data service that enables secure high bandwidth connectivity between two sites. BT Openreach has experienced a surge of demand for EAD and thus this new partnership with Ciena, a highly competent network specialist company, is intended to support the UK’s drive for high capacity business Ethernet. François Locoh-Donou, senior vice president, global products group at Ciena stated: “Openreach is delivering on its promise to provide flexible and robust Ethernet services in the UK. By deploying a simplified, on-demand infrastructure with our packet networking and software solutions, Openreach is ensuring its communication provider customers have access to the support and services they need to be competitive.”
The UK’s high capacity Ethernet market is expected to grow by 23% over the next four years according to telecoms research company Ovum, due to it being propositioned next to internet service bundles such as cloud Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Hosted Telephony. The requirement for high speed and larger capacity networks to connect multiple sites is growing. An observation that Jon Hurry, MD, Strategy, Commercial, Portfolio & Policy, Openreach echoed in his statement:
“We have been providing our Ethernet Access Direct products to the UK communications industry since 2009. During this time, market demand for secure, dedicated business connectivity has grown exponentially — literally underpinning the bread and butter of businesses right across the UK. Maintaining a robust supply chain against this backdrop is of paramount importance to us and our customers. Choosing Ciena as our new dual Network Termination Equipment vendor will provide assurance of continuous supply while also maximising opportunities to further develop the capabilities we offer.”
